Growing to Succeed

PSHE

(Personal, Social, Health Education)

Health and Wellbeing

At Asquith we are committed to the development of the children's social, emotional skills and their health and well-being. We are committed to developing the children's responsibility to themselves, others in school and the wider community around them.

Personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables pupils to become well rounded individuals, who can make the right choices to enable themselves to be healthy, independent and responsible young people.

PSHE curriculum

The intent of our PSHE curriculum at Asquith is to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum which meets the needs of all our pupils. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. At Asquith we fully recognise the important relationship between well-being and learning. Ultimately, our aim is to teach our children the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships and lifestyles in our wider world.  We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.

Our PSHE Curriculum

You, Me and PSHE

At Asquith Primary School, we base our PSHE Curriculum on the 'You, Me & PSHE' Scheme

                                                                                                    You, Me, PSHE Thursday 3 November, 1.30 – 4.00

You, Me, PSHE is a planning resource which supports the teaching of PSHE education in Key Stages 1 and 2.

The planning resource includes lesson plans, whole school and year group curriculum overviews, assessment activities and resources for teachers to use in lessons. The curriculum overviews enable teachers to track topics across the academic year alongside relevant learning expectations.

Each topic in the resources incorporates activities to establish the starting point of learners and assess progress. The topics included are:

  • Careers
  • Drug, alcohol and tobacco education
  • Financial capability and economic wellbeing
  • Identity, society and equality
  • Keeping safe and managing risk
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical health and wellbeing
  • Living and growing

Understanding Relationship, Sex and Health Education in your child’s primary school: A Guide for Parents

We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. That is why, from the academic year 2020/2021, all primary age children will be taught Relationship, Sex and Health Education.

These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life. The world for all young people looks very different from the way it did 20 years ago when this curriculum was last updated – these changes bring the content into the 21st century, so that it is relevant for your child.

We have flexibility to deliver the content in a way that is age and developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs and religious background of its pupils.

Relationships Education

Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.

Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age-appropriate way, your child’s school will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • families and people who care for me
  • caring friendships
  • respectful relationships
  • online relationships
  • being safe

Health Education

Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • mental wellbeing
  • internet safety and harms
  • physical health and fitness
  • healthy eating
  • facts and risks associated with drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • health and prevention
  • basic first aid
  • changing adolescent body

Your rights as a parent

The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued under this new curriculum. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up.

Right to withdraw your child

You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.

If you do not want your child to take part in some or all of the lessons on Sex Education, you can ask that they are withdrawn. At primary level, the head teacher must grant this request. The science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. If you want to know more about what will be taught as part of the new subjects please read the RSE policy.

MindMate lessons

What are Mindmate lessons?

Mindmate lessons are an exciting and modern way to teach aspects of the social, emotional and mental health curriculum. These lessons use stories and video clips to really encourage the children to think and discuss key issues such as strong emotions and life changes.

They cover six strands from Year 1 to Year 6.

Please see an overview of these strands in the attached document.
