Curriculum

At Asquith Primary School we are constantly evaluating the effectiveness of our curriculum and adapting the way in which we approach learning and teaching so that our curriculum is current and meets the needs of all our pupils.

To launch the 2020 term, we have remodelled our curriculum to ensure that it is broad and engaging, preparing pupils for life in an ever changing and challenging world.

Our curriculum has six branches- six 'intentions' which will span all areas of learning and enable our pupils to 'grow to succeed' It is our mission that every child, everyday will  grow to succeed as a result of our Asquith vision, provision and accompanying spirit!

Remote learning

Our remote learning policy is published below and became applicable on 22nd October 2020.

Please click on the remote learning tile to access further information re remote learning at Asquith.

In the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) we plan from the Early Years Foundation Stage framework using the Development Matters document.  The learning is then translated into themes and topics throughout the year.

We follow the New National Curriculum for England in Key Stages 1 and 2 and embed this within topics and themes across the school. English, Reading, Maths and science  teaching is a priority focus and these lessons are taught discretely then further developed through other curriculum subjects in topics.  Topic overview grids for each year group are included in the documents below for each Key Stage. Long term and Medium term overviews for each year group are available upon request.

What our pupils say

'Our teachers make learning fun and try to link things together.  We enjoy history and like it when we end the topic with a celebration assembly or themed day'.

'We enjoy maths, we get a lot done!'

'The topic on Morley in Year 2 was really interesting, and learning about Dinosaurs in Year 3.  We had to work out where our fossil came from!

Planning

Alongside the introduction of the National Curriculum, we have worked with Liz Greensides from GAL Education, who has produced a development of skills and knowledge content for planning progression through the National Curriculum 2014.  This is called 'The Rainbow Continuum', which outlines learning and a progression of learning in Key Stages 1 and 2 across all statutory subjects.  More information about this and a copy to view can be obtained from the school office on request. Social Moral Spiritual and Cultural understanding form the core of our curriculum ethos. Learning is embedded across all subjects and it is highlighted in our parent friendly plans, posted half termly on the year group pages within the curriculum tab.

Phonics

Our Early Years team use Jolly Phonics as an introduction to learning letters sounds.  This then leads in to Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) where we follow the 'Letters and Sounds' progression of phonics.

Children are taught using a variety of materials including games, books, songs, interactive ICT programmes, group work and some whole class sessions.

An intervention programme called 'TELL' is used in addition to the daily phonics sessions in class for pupils who may require extra support.

Reading

Our core reading scheme throughout school is Rigby.  We do, however, supplement this with other schemes which provide support for phonics, extend reading at specific points, compliment topics and engage different groups of learners.
